Across White Sands: derived from an anthropological find in White Sands National Park, the traditional lands of the Apache, Mansos, and Piro people. 10,000 years ago a woman and a child were traveling to a village pursued by a mammoth and giant sloth. This journey, memorialized in fossilized footprints, became one of the most important discoveries of our time. Proving once and for all the indigenous people of the Americas have always been here. The woman intermittently carried the child across the primitive terrain. I visualize a performance on a stationary treadmill underscored by music. This piece is earthy, indigenous, and has the potential to preserve a story once buried in white sand. A poignant metaphor for the current experience of indigenous peoples.
Vice & Virtue asks: are Diambra and Isabella fighting because they love Fabio, or each other? A reimagining of the nearly fatal duel between these 1550s Italian noblewomen, this short play brings the queer subtext of women gladiators to life. An exploration of the Madonna and the Whore, V&V mirrors and challenges society's view of the feminine, illuminating the many rich layers of womanhood.
Vice & Virtue premiered at the New York Theater Festival Spring/Summer 2022
